BPD Screener

This is a screening questionnaire, not a diagnosis. Borderline personality disorder can only be diagnosed by a qualified professional after a careful assessment. A high score does not mean you have BPD. If these experiences affect your life, please reach out to a mental-health professional.

The MSI-BPD counts how many of the ten items you answered yes to. A count of 7 or more is the usual point at which a fuller assessment for borderline personality disorder may be worthwhile.

What it does and doesn't mean

This is a brief screen, not a diagnosis. Many of these experiences — moodiness, fear of abandonment, feeling empty — are common and can come from many sources, including trauma, depression or simply a hard period of life. BPD is diagnosed by a clinician over time, never by a questionnaire.

What to do next

  • If you scored 7+ , or these patterns are causing you distress or hurting your relationships, talk to a mental-health professional.
  • BPD is treatable — therapies like DBT help a great many people.

If you're struggling

If you've had thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out now — contact your local emergency number, or a crisis line such as 988 (US) or 116 123 (Samaritans, UK/IE).
